LA CROSSE, Wisconsin (WXOW) - Two La Crosse residents, charged with causing mental harm to a three-year-old child and child neglect resulting in bodily harm, appeared in court Monday.
The child lived with her father, Dustin Barnes, 23, and his girlfriend, Josie Dikeman, 20.
According to the criminal complaint, a social worker began investigating Barnes and Dikeman following concerns about changes in the child's behavior, weight loss and thinning hair.
The complaint said a medical examiner found a variety of fractures in the 3-year-old's hands and feet. The doctor said they appeared to be "non-accidental trauma consistent with being hit with a blunt object."
When a nurse asked the 3-year-old what happened, the child said, "mommy and daddy."
When questioned about the non-accidental fractures, Barnes said she did not know what happened. Dikeman requested a lawyer.
Barnes and Dikeman said they used time-outs for discipline, but no physical punishment, according to the complaint.
Barnes and Dikeman are set to return to court March 11.
