LA CROSSE, Wisconsin (WXOW) - One team returns to defend its state title while the other is looking for its second gold ball in three years.
The Onalaska Hilltoppers and Aquinas Blugolds both won on Saturday in sectional final action to advance to the WIAA Boys State Basketball Tournament next week at the Kohl Center in Madison.
Onalaska, 24-2, and last season's Division 2 champs, defeated Hortonville 64-54 in Marshfield. Matt Thomas had 41 points in the game. He also reached the 2,000 point milestone during the contest.
Aquinas's tournament bid in Division 3 comes after downing Barron 66-49 in River Falls. Nolan Ritter had 18 points while Parker Weber added 15 points plus 13 rebounds.
Both teams play again at the Kohl Center Friday. Aquinas, 22-4, plays Little Chute, 25-1, in the first Divsion 3 game of the day at 9:05am.
Friday afternoon is when the Hilltoppers tip off against 22-4 Pulaski. Game time is 1:35pm.
The other team with a chance to head to state, Onalaska Luther, fell to Cuba City 77-74 in overtime.
