LA CROSSE, Wisconsin (WXOW) - When the forecast predicts heavy snow, it's up to the La Crosse Street Department to declare a snow removal period.
That's when the streets exempt from the normal alternate side parking rules, need to follow them.
It's a way for plows to drive through and clear the roads so emergency vehicles can pass through.
The exempt area runs from around West Avenue to 16th Street, and from State Street to La Crosse Street.
"This is for public safety," said Assistant Street Superintendent Andy Bakalars. "That's the reason we do this; so we can get the snow plow back (and) get emergency vehicles (through). We've had years past where the streets become so narrow they can't get a fire truck through. That's the reason we do this."
The city alerts the public of snow removal periods about seven hours in advance on the city website, and sends messages to residents' cell phones.
