MADISON (WKOW) -- Neighbors took the stand Wednesday afternoon in the trial for Chad Chritton trial to testify about what they saw outside his Madison home.
Chad Chritton faces seven counts of child abuse. He's accused of leaving his 15-year-old daughter, known as SLC, in the basement with no food or a bathroom. She was found last February after escaping the home. She weighed less than 70 pounds.
For the 7th day the prosecution continued calling witnesses against Chritton, including neighbors who live near the Chrittons' home.
A mother and her two children, who lived across the street from the Chrittons for about six years, talked about what they witnessed when they saw the girl outside.
Melissa Clark testified that she repeatedly saw the victim shoveling snow by herself, not wearing appropriate winter clothing. Clark said she encouraged her family to help the girl.
"I had asked my children whenever they saw her out shoveling alone to please go over and help or offer her winter clothing," says Clark. "We offered her food sometimes."
Clark says any time they would offer the girl food or warm clothing she wouldn't accept anything, but they did help her shovel. Clark's children testified the girl looked very skinny and had a hard time speaking.
Clark's mother also told the jury she witnessed something she thought was concerning. Marsha Clark is a former detective with Stoughton police. She says when she was visiting her family, she saw the girl dragging a very large garbage can and testified that Chritton and his wife were yelling at the girl. At that point, the woman says she called Dane County Human Services.
