MCHS in need of volunteers for hospice program

Posted:
LA CROSSE, Wisconsin (WXOW)  — Of all the medicines patients nearing the end of life need to face each day, one of the most important doesn't come from a bottle. It comes from friendship. Volunteers for the Hospice program at Mayo Clinic Health System Franciscan Healthcare work to fulfill that prescription. They provide companionship, emotional support, a listening ear and kindness.

The need never ends. And, right now Mayo Clinic Health System Franciscan Healthcare is looking for caring people to become Hospice volunteers in La Crosse, Wis., Caledonia, Minn., and the surrounding areas. In addition to providing companionship and emotional support, volunteers also help with basic daily tasks like letter writing, feeding and grocery shopping. They serve as a supplement to professional care providers. Volunteers carry some of the burden for family members of a terminally ill person, relieving the isolation they may feel from caretaking.
People interested in becoming part of the program can attend the upcoming training session. The four-part session will be held Tuesday, April 2, Thursday, April 4, Tuesday, April 9 and Thursday, April 11 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the Lang Conference Room, first floor of the Hospital, 700 West Avenue South.
