MADISON, Wisconsin (WXOW) - Senior guard Bronson Koenig scored 16 points as La Crosse Aquinas beat Lodi 53-48 to win their second WIAA Division 3 state championship in three years Saturday afternoon at the Kohl Center in Madison.
Koenig, who has committed to Wisconsin, was 1 of 3 players in double figures for the Blugolds (24-4), who won their second state title in three seasons. Nolan Ritter added 15 and Michael Conway contributed 12 for the Blugolds.
Turnovers and cold shooting contributed to Lodi only scoring 12 points in the first half compared to 24 for Aquinas.
Despite trailing by 19 early in the fourth quarter, Lodi (24-4) cut the lead to 47-44 off a 12-0 run in the fourth quarter following a 3-pointer from Kris Seffrood. Although failing to make a field goal over the final 3:54, Aquinas went 6 for 6 from the free throw line in the final 1:17.
The Blue Devils got a game-high 19 points from Seffoord. Jordan Shea, who had 21 in Lodi's semifinal game on Friday, was held to 11 points.
A special homecoming for the team is planned Sunday afternoon at 2pm at the school.
