LA CROSSE, Wisconsin (WXOW) - A neighborhood garden has stemmed into a way to fund a free health care provider.
Tuesday the Washburn Neighborhood Association and Mayo Clinic Health System presented an almost $1,000 check to Saint Clare Health Mission.
Saint Clare is a non-profit providing free service to people with little or no access to medical care.
Donations are made by each gardener who rents a plot of land in the Washburn Neighborhood Garden.
"But it also presents this link between people in the neighborhood working together, working the garden, growing their food, building a sense of community among themselves, and then reaching out and assisting a clinic, which exists here also in their neighborhood," said Michael Brown, liaison between Mayo Clinic Health System and the Washburn Neighborhood Garden.
Washburn gardeners also donate at least 10 percent of the produce they grow to local food pantries.
Last year the garden produced about 800 pounds of food.
