TOMAH, WI (WXOW)—iVantage Health Analytics named Western Wisconsin hospitals as some of the best rural hospitals in the country.
The report evaluates things like performance, finances and patient recovery.
According to its Top 100 Critical Access List, nearly one third of the hospitals on top 100 critical access list are from Wisconsin, Iowa and Minnesota, including Prairie Du Chien Memorial Hospital, Black River Memorial Hospital and Tomah Memorial Hospital.
A hospital with 25 beds may not seem like it's making an impact on its community. But employees at Tomah memorial said that's what they're all about.
"Driving is hardship sometimes for patients cost as well as time when we're able to provide that service in Tomah we can save that time and cost," Shelly Egstad, Director of Quality and Compliance, Tomah Memorial Hospital said.
If critical access hospitals like Tomah Memorial weren't here patients could have to drive to bigger cities like La Crosse to be seen at a bigger hospital.
"That first hour of getting to a higher level of care," Egstad said. "Is very crucial in saving a patients life."
For the 13,000 patients the emergency rooms sees in a year, getting help quickly makes all the difference in their recovery.
"We are not designed to be a trauma center we are designed to stabilize the patient and get them to where they need for further care," she said.
Tomah Memorial isn't just about helping the community in emergencies.
"We have general surgery, we have a large O.B. volume. We do roughly 360 deliveries a year," Egstad said.
But, she said what puts them on the top 100 list is how they treat their patients.
"We ask for feedback from our patient's and we send patient satisfaction surveys," Egstad said. "We act on those surveys. We take every comment we get seriously."
She says they're serious about listening to their patients so they can continue to do better and remain on the top 100 list.
