Pope Francis lauded for interfaith dialogue

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) -- Jewish leaders in Argentina are thrilled with the election of Pope Francis, whom they remember as a clergyman who always worked hard in their country to foster warm relations with other faiths.

Rabbi Alejandro Avruj noted Monday that as Buenos Aires archbishop, Jorge Mario Bergoglio opened the cathedral of the city to interfaith ceremonies.

He also brought leaders of the Jewish, Muslim, evangelical and Orthodox Christian faiths into the Metropolitan Cathedral to pray for peace in the Middle East last November.

Avruj says Bergoglio has "a very deep capacity for dialogue with other religions," and that he and other Jewish leaders hope he continues to promote that dialogue as pontiff.

Pope Francis will be formally installed Tuesday at the Vatican.
