Proposed House bill would end federal prohibition of marijuana

WASHINGTON (WXOW) -- A bill proposed in the House of Representatives would end federal prohibition of marijuana, leaving regulation up to the states.

H.R. 499 was introduced in early February by Colorado Democrat Jared Polis. Wisconsin Congressman Mark Pocan is one of 13 co-sponsors on the bill.

The bill says, "to decriminalize marijuana at the Federal level, to leave to the States a power to regulate marijuana that is similar to the power they have to regulate alcohol, and for other purposes."  If passed, the bill would remove marijuana from the schedule of controlled substances.

It would also allow states to issue permits to individuals to grow, sell or transport the plant.

The bill has been referred to five House committees for approval which include the Committee on Agriculture (Subcommittee on Conservation, Energy and Forestry), Committee on Energy and Commerce (Subcommittee on Health), Committee on the Judiciary (Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism, and Homeland Security), Committee on Natural Resources (Subcommittee on National Parks, Forests and Public Lands), and the Committee on Ways and Means.

Of the 13 cosponsors, 12 are Democrat and one Republican representing the states of California, Illinois, Maine, New York, Oregon, Tennessee, Virginia, Wisconsin and the District of Columbia.
