Shoppers put a ‘spring’ in their shopping this March

LA CROSSE, Wisconsin (WXOW) - Spring is in the air, which put a spring in shoppers' steps at the Valley View Mall.

According to management, the week leading up to Easter brings the biggest rush into the stores during the spring season.

An Easter treat for mall manager Jeff Odom.

"With Easter falling at the end of March, March (is expected) to be a really good month for us," Odom said. "(We're) probably looking at a 4 percent increase is what is projecting across the nation for retail sales."

Sales that complete that perfect outfit for those last minute shoppers.

"We have to get (my son) a tie for Easter tomorrow, for church," said shopper Kayla Williams. "We put it off, and we put it off, and are finally here last minute to do that."

Other mall goers were not entirely sure what they were there shopping for.

"Um… you'd have to ask my wife on that," said Eric Spielman.

But the added mall traffic didn't seem to slow anyone down.

"I thought it'd be really crowded, but once we got inside, it didn't seem so bad," said shopper Pam Listle.

Spring makes up about 12 percent of the year's sales, Odom said, compared to the winter holiday season that makes up 20 percent.

And spring shopping success depends when Easter falls.

"So it's gonna be interesting to see how April sales are, being that Easter was in April last year, so it was later," Odom said.

But with Easter this Sunday, shoppers are ready to cash out and head home.

"This is it, go get some lunch and head home. Try to relax," said James Wright. Saturday afternoon, he finished up his spring shopping.
