National Collie Competition Invades La Crosse

LA CROSSE, Wisconsin (WXOW) -- The Collie Club of America's national championship competitions have come to La Crosse.

Collies and their owners, hailing from roughly 30 states, are competing in contests testing agility and obedience, among other traits, at the Family Dog Center on Airport Road.

Tuesday marks the final day of the competition, which is free to attend and expected to run from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m.

"The dogs love it," said Sally Mobraaten, a veterinarian from California competing with her two collies Dexter and Patrick.

"They love running around with their owners, they love jumping and getting treats. Some of the dogs are super athletes at the courses, others are not quite as athletic, but they just love to be with their owners," she said.

Mobraaten ran Dexter through the agility course Monday -- running him up, down and around obstacles under the watchful eye of American Kennel Club Judge Katherine Rudolph.

"Judges are looking for all the bars to stay up on the jumps and at least one paw touching the yellow contact zone on the teeter, the 'a-frame' and the dog walk," she said.

"Plus we're looking for teamwork," Rudolph added.
