RHINELANDER, Wisconsin (WXOW) - The nation's fastest texter, who happens to be from Wisconsin, is helping the state Department of Transportation warn everyone about the dangers of texting and driving.
New TV and radio ads feature Rhinelander's Austin Wierschke. He is the two-time L.G. U.S. National Texting Champion. In the ad he says he never sends a message while behind the wheel.
Austin says, "I believe that texting and driving can wait. It's something that is becoming the new drunk driving. And it's scarier because it's occurring in the younger drivers which are the drivers fresh out of driving school."
The commercial started airing on Monday (04/01). A Pew research survey says 40% of teenagers say they've been in the car when the driver used a cell phone in a way that put people in danger.
