LA CROSSE, Wisconsin (WXOW) - A growing number of people are behind on their heating bills and time is running out to pay up.
The state bans utilities from cutting off service during the winter months. But that moratorium ends April 15th. Starting April 16th utilities can cut off service to people who owe them money. And more people are in that situation this year. Xcel Energy says 35,000 customers are more than a month behind on their bills. That's about a thousand more people than last winter.
And the amount they owe, $9.1 million, is up $1-million from last year as well. Xcel says the higher numbers are likely due to the longer, colder winter. The energy company is urging customers not to wait to set up payment arrangements and to get information on available energy assistance.
