Unemployment up in most Wis cities, counties

MADISON, Wisconsin (WXOW) - Unemployment rates increased in most Wisconsin cities and counties in February. La Crosse's unemployment rate remained the same.

The state Department of Workforce Development reported Wednesday that rates went up in 20 of the 32 largest cities between January and February. 61 of 72 counties had an increase.

La Crosse bucked the trend with the same 7.5% rate as January. It ranked 20 out of the 32 largest cities. 

Racine had the highest rate at 13.4%, which is up from where the city was a year ago when its rate was 12.5%. Caledonia had the lowest rate at 4%.

At the county level, only Dane County had a lower unemployment rate than La Crosse County, which was 71st of 72 counties in the state in terms of joblessness.  La Crosse reported a 6.4% rate, compared to Dane County's 5.5%.

Other area counties: Trempealeau County ranked 65th (7.1%), Vernon 47th (8.0%), Monroe (8.1%), and Jackson 23rd (9.9%).

Menominee County had the highest unemployment at 15%. 

Local unemployment rates are not seasonally adjusted and are based on a survey of 1,450 households.
