MOUNT IDA (WKOW) -- A semi driver died Wednesday morning during a crash in Grant County.
It happened around 10:45 a.m. along Highway 18 in the town of Mount Ida, west of Fennimore.
The Grant County Sheriff's Department says the semi had trouble going around a curve, left the road and slammed into a tree. The rig was carrying wheels for railroad cars and those came loose and crushed the cab before coming to rest nearby.
Authorities say the driver, 38-year-old Michael Schoenbeck of Grant Park, Illinois, was not wearing his seatbelt. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
One lane of the highway near Mount Ida was closed for nearly six hours due to crash investigation and clean up of the scene.
