Homeowners urged to dial before digging

LA CROSSE, Wisconsin (WXOW) - With the spring thaw at hand, Wisconsin utility officials are reminding people to dial in before digging.

The Public Service Commission says digging without knowing the location of pipelines, wires and cables can cause harm, service interruptions and expensive repairs.

They say many digging accidents result from homeowners failing to check for underground obstacles.

They can call a statewide hotline: (800) 242-8511 at least three days before they dig to get help locating potential problems.

Homeowners, besides the possible risk of physical injury or death from hitting a line, can also face fines for not contacting Diggers Hotline beforehand.

They can also file a free request online at www.diggershotline.com
