Group in Minn. House DFL key to gay marriage fate

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) - Gay marriage supporters in Minnesota may have national momentum on their side, but they also have a math problem in the Minnesota House.

So far, no House Republicans have pledged support for a bill that could come up for a vote later this spring. If House Democrats have to pass the bill alone, only 5 of their 73 members could defect.

But 17 House Democrats represent districts where most voters supported last fall's gay marriage ban. Many won't say how they'll vote, and say they might have to weigh their own personal view against the will of constituents.

Backers acknowledge they're still a handful of votes short in the House. They say House Democrats should consider not just their district, but what they think is right.
