LA CROSSE, Wisconsin (WXOW)-- April is national Child Abuse Prevention month. The goal is preventing abuse and neglect through education, training and awareness.
To kick off the month, volunteers placed pinwheels outside the La Crosse YMCA. There are more than 17-hundred pinwheels, one for each child involved in a reported case of abuse or neglect in La Crosse County in the past year.
The event is put on by Stepping Stones Child Advocacy Center and The Coulee Region Child Abuse Prevention Task Force. The director of the center, Jeanne Meyer said the pinwheel is a symbol of hope.
