Food prices stable in Wisconsin

MADISON, Wisconsin (WXOW) - Wisconsin food prices have remained relatively stable, despite recent energy spikes and last summer's drought.

A survey by the Wisconsin Farm Bureau shows the average cost for 16 food items in 2013 rose about 1% since late 2012. The bureau's market basket survey shows those items collectively cost $49.91. That's a 57-cent increase from last year. And, it's $1.63 less for the same items in a national survey by the American Farm Bureau Federation.

Wisconsin Farm Bureau Federation spokesman Casey Langan said that several factors may impact prices this year, including a sustained increase in global energy prices. Langan says a late freeze in the spring growing season like Wisconsin experienced last year would cause disruptions in fruit and vegetable production.
