LA CROSSE, Wisconsin (WXOW) -- A man arrested by FBI agents on La Crosse's south side last week remains in federal custody in Chicago.

Walter Blackman, 50, of Gary, Ind. is facing felony drug and firearms charges.

Randall Samborn, a public information officer at the U.S. Attorney's office in Chicago, said Blackman is now awaiting a detention hearing, or bond hearing, on April 16. The hearing was originally scheduled for Monday but postponed at the request of the defense.

Blackman was arrested at La Crosse's 4330 Verchota Street Thursday and made his first appearance in federal court shortly afterwards.

Criminal complaints allege he is a high-ranking member of Chicago's "Black Disciples" gang. In all, 18 alleged members of the Black Disciples were arrested on April 5.

Blackman had been spending a considerable amount of time in La Crosse, but all the charges he's currently facing stem from alleged criminal activity in Chicago.

FBI affidavits accuse Blackman of buying a firearm despite being barred from doing so due to a December, 2004 drug conviction in Cook County, Ill. Those same affidavits also allege Blackman sold both heroine and crack cocaine to a confidential informant on several occasions.
Because Blackman has not yet appeared for a detention hearing, he's currently in federal custody without bond.
