Runners return from Boston and share experiences

Eau Claire (WQOW) - An Eau Claire first time Boston Marathon finisher and his wife have returned home safely.

They have a unique perspective, not only where they in Boston Monday, but they're also organizing Eau Claire's marathon scheduled for May 5th.

"Usually you say, 'Oh I've been there before.'  But this was like, 'We were just there'!" says Karen Drechsel.

"There were just so many things that happened, that if you look back on it, realize that we were blessed on being able to get out of there safely," says her husband Kevin.

Karen and Kevin Drechsel reflect on how closely they avoided tragedy in Boston.

"Makes you put things into perspective.  You know, this is a run.  That's life and death and it's something that really shouldn't happen at an event like this," says Kevin.

"Just matters of minutes would have been different for us and we're just very fortunate that we made it home safely," says Karen.

Now that they're home, the Drechsel's get back to work, which happens to be preparing the Eau Claire marathon in early May.

"We went over the emergency plan and made sure we had every possibility, what ifs, covered," says Karen.

"We just have to be prepared and communicate and know what to do," says Karen.

But Boston did prepare and still some tragedies can't be avoided.

"It's also scary in realizing that things are out of my control.  I really can't control another person from doing something like this," says Kevin.

1,500 people are signed up for the Eau Claire marathon.

The Drechsels say their biggest worry is usually the weather, but they will also make sure the emergency plan is ready for race day.
