Walker won't push for gun background checks

MADISON, Wis. (AP) - Gov. Scott Walker says he won't push for more extensive background checks for gun owners in Wisconsin following inaction in the U.S. Senate on the issue.

Walker was asked about the issue Thursday during a conference call from Shanghai where he is leading a 10-day trade mission.

The governor has repeatedly said he is focused on improving mental health services in the state and he is reiterating that position.

Wisconsin requires people who purchase guns from federal licensed dealers to undergo background checks, but it doesn't regulate private transactions. Democrats in Wisconsin are calling for universal background checks.

Walker says the issue should be left to the federal government to regulate, not individual states.
