MADISON (WXOW) -- Heavy, wet snow blanketed parts of northwestern Wisconsin Tuesday morning, prompting a May snow day for students in places like Menomonie, River Falls, Chetek, Rice Lake, Barron and Durand.
The National Weather Service reported 14 inches of snow in Ellsworth, nine inches in River Falls and eight inches in Ashland. Utility crews in the region were working Tuesday morning to restore power to hundreds of Xcel Energy customers.
The Wisconsin State Patrol says the heavy, wet snow played a factor in a deadly crash involving two semis. State Police Sgt. David Fish says one semi rolled over on a slippery Interstate 94 near Menomonie and was struck by the second semi early Thursday morning. Fish says the driver of the first semi was killed.
