La Crosse, WISCONSIN (WXOW) The UW-La Crosse tennis teams were not able to qualify for the division three national meet as they had hoped.
But it certainly doesn't take away from the milestone season for the men's and women's teams and their head coach.
The UW-L women won 16 duals for a 5th straight season and the men's squad set a single-season record with 18 dual match wins.
They've all come under head coach Bill Hehli, who surpassed 500 career dual wins a couple of weeks ago.
Remember, like the baseball team, this program was on the chopping block in 2009 because of lack of funding.
"You get a young, undeveloped freshman and you work with him or her over the 4 years and by the time they're a junior or senior they're getting all-American honors and stuff like that. That's how we do things here and that's how it's been for many years," Hehli said.
Hehli said both programs are on stable ground financially for now, although fundraising will continue.
