LA CROSSE, Wisconsin (WXOW)—After standing vacant for a decade, the county is considering an offer on five and a half acres of land on Barron Island.
West Coast Development offered the county $750,000 for the land.
They want to build duplexes and four-plexes that have room for 47 families.
Joe Van Aelstyn, owner of West Coast Development, said now is the perfect time for make this investment because interest rates are low.
The development will cost about $10 million.
He also says its a great piece of property, with river views.
None of the homes will be river front properties because the way the parcel is shaped, but there are docks already on the island that people can rent.
There have been other talks about developing Barron Island. But this is the first offer.
Tara Johnson, La Crosse County Board of Supervisors, said its a pretty fair deal.
"The purchase price is one part of the equation," Johnson said. "But then it's the increment that comes from developing land that currently is sitting gaining no money at all year in and year out."
The County Board hopes to approve the sale during their next meeting on May 16.
Van Aelstyns hope to begin construction on September 1st, with a goal of homeowners moving in by the end of the year.
