Postal service to hold annual food drive Saturday

LA CROSSE, Wisconsin (WXOW) -- Postal workers across the country will participate in the largest, single day food drive of the year Saturday.

"Stamp Out Hunger" is the 21st annual such food drive, in which post offices team up with non-profits and other charitable organizations.

In La Crosse, the postal service has partnered with the Great Rivers United Way, Hunger Task Force, New Horizons Shelter, the Onalaska Food Basket, the Salvation Army, WAFER food pantry and the Western Wisconsin AFL-CIO.

Those wishing to donate can fill a bag, or bags, with non perishable food items.
The bags can be left by your mailbox Saturday morning and postal workers or volunteers will then collect them.

"We know there are a lot of people out there in need," said Timothy Griffin, a mail carrier in charge of this year's La Crosse food drive. "One in six families don't know where their next meal is coming from. So we need to help them if we can."

Griffin added all food collected in the La Crosse area will stay local -- benefiting La Crosse organizations and shelters.

Liz Beard, of New Horizons Shelter, said the donations her facility receives will last it until the holiday season.

Griffin said 125-thousand pounds of food were collected during last year's food drive in the Coulee Region.

He said organizers have not set a specific goal for this year's drive, but they would like to eclipse last year's mark.
