WHITEWATER, Wisconsin (WXOW) -- UW-La Crosse baseball once again channeled the magic of May in the WIAC Tournament.
The Eagles turned some heads beating top-seed Whitewater on Saturday, and did so again Sunday morning to send the one-seed packing at Prucha Field in Whitewater.
So, after a Saturday night loss UW-Stevens Point in the double elimination tournament, La Crosse needed two straight wins over Point--a team they had not beaten all season. In game one, with runs hard to come by, Alex Cordova hit the difference-making RBI. UWL won 2-1 and forced a winner-take-all game two.
UWSP scored early in game two. Ryan Schilter plated a run on a hard-hit grounder to short making it a 2-0 Point lead. La Crosse responded with a home run from Brooks Braga but went into the 5th facing a 6-1 deficit.
The Eagles threatened, loading the bases for Cole Cefalu. The UWL center fielder blasted a grand slam home run to bring La Crosse back within a run. After that, neither team scored again, resulting in a 6-5 win for Stevens Point.
The Pointers earned an automatic bid into the NCAA Division III tournament with the WIAC Tournament win. The national tournament field will be announced on Monday.
