UW-L tobacco-free campus plans postponed

LA CROSSE, Wisconsin (WXOW) – Plans to make the UW-L campus tobacco-free are currently on hold.

Organizers are now working to revise the proposal to address the concerns of all the university's governance groups – the Academic Staff Council, Classified Staff Council, Faculty Senate and Student Senate.

The Nobacco '13 initiative would have banned all tobacco usage from campus beginning July 1.

Current UW-L policy bans smoking within 25 feet of campus buildings.

The Student Senate approved the Nobacco plan, but other governance groups expressed concerns about its enforcement policy and how a non-smoking campus will affect the adjacent neighborhoods.

"The revised policy right now is looking like we will say, literally, we will request that smokers use the sidewalks on the perimeter of the campus," said Chancellor Joe Gow.

Wellness Coordinator Jason Bertrand and health education measures are spearheading Nobacco.

Once they revise the policy, they'll solicit the governance groups for approval.

Banning tobacco use/smoking on campus has been unsuccessfully pursued twice in the last 10 years.
