Lawmakers seek more funding for domestic violence victim services

Western Wisconsin (WQOW) - Local Republicans sent a letter to the Joint Finance Committee asking for an additional one million dollars in the budget to support domestic violence victim services.

Representatives Suder, Petryk, Bernier and Larson were among those who sent the letter.  They said shelters serve 1,400 domestic violence victims every day in Wisconsin, but about 270 are denied.  They want more funding to help shelters add capacity so victims aren't denied services.

They also suggested more attention needs to be paid to the issue in rural areas.  They said more than 80% of domestic abuse victims are sheltered in rural counties.
