Police: 41-year-old man arrested; Altoona police sought him

The Marathon County Sheriff's Department says a 41-year-old man wanted by police in Altoona was arrested in Mosinee after dozens of officers responded.

Lt. Frank Hanousek said Thursday the man "was taken into custody without incident other than fleeing on foot."

Hanousek said the chase began in the Mosinee area about 3 p.m. Wednesday and ended in town near a home.

Altoona Police Chief James Small did not immediately return a telephone message Thursday.

Newsline 9 has learned new information about a high-speed chase Wednesday in Marathon County.

One man was arrested there. Marathon County Sheriff's Lt. Randy Albert says this arrest is related to a case in Eau Claire County. He told Newsline 9 the man arrested is a person of interest in a case in Altoona.

This comes just one day after a suspicious death there. But police are not saying if these two cases are related.

The chase started around 3:00 p.m. Dozens of officers swarmed a neighborhood in Mosinee after they say the suspect ran away.

"They were kind of walking up and down the driveway in the woods line," said resident Matt Kasper."They were kind of peeking in there. One of the officers had a pistol in his hand, and I'd seen one of the other officers in the back. He had his long riffle out."

Kasper says he was driving on Old Highway 51 in Mosinee when he saw police pull into his mother-in-law's house.

He says they searched the backyard.

"I figured I better go turn around and check out make sure she was fine and everything was OK," said Kasper. "Kind of just sat and watched out the window everything unfold as the cop cars poured in the driveway."

Authorities say the suspect was eventually arrested. Lt. Albert tells Newsline 9 the man is a person of interest in Altoona, Wisconsin in Eau Claire County.

This comes a day after a suspicious death there. Police there say one person was found dead at a house on Tuesday.

According to the Marathon County Sheriff's Department, Altoona police were on their way Wednesday evening to pick up the suspect in this chase. But there's no word on whether the two cases are related.

Back at the scene, Kasper says police and several K-9s stayed there more than an hour after the chase ended.

"Mosinee is such a small town. Never would have expected to come across something like this," said Kasper. "It was pretty crazy."

Marathon County Sheriff's officials say more information is expected to be released Thursday by the Altoona Police Department.
