GRAND CHUTE, Wisconsin (WXOW) - Despite committing eight errors in the game, Oconto's offense scored three runs in the fifth inning to give them a 4-3 win over Westby in the Division 3 State Baseball Championship.
All of the Norsemen's offense came in the third inning with some assistance by Oconto. Alex Robson got on base on one of Oconto's errors, this one by third baseman Ricky Mataitis. Robson moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Alex Bluske, then stole third. Tyler Ihrcke's single brought Robson home for Westby's first run of the game. Ihrcke went to second on a throwing error by pitcher Tyler Trepanier. Nick Neely then singled to right. Throwing errors by Trepanier and centerfielder Tanner Pillsbury allowed Ihrcke to score and move Neely to third. He then scored on a fly ball out to Pillsbury in center.
The 3-1 Westby lead held up until the fifth when Oconto erupted for five straight singles with two outs already in the books. With one run already across, and Grant Frazer on third, Trent Mehlberg's attempted steal of second lead to a rundown. As that unfolded, Frazer broke for home. Playing second base, Tyler Ihrcke tried to throw home to get Frazer. The throw was off the mark, allowing Frazer to score and Mehlberg to go to third. He scored when Kyle Krueger singled. Pinch runner Cody Zahm, in for Krueger, scored when Blake Campshure hit the final single of the inning for Oconto.
With one down in the top of the seventh, the Norsemen looked like they were getting their offense going when Alex Bluske got on base on a throwing error by pitcher Kyle Krueger. The rally ended abruptly when Tyler Ihrcke lined to Grant Frazer at short, who then threw back to first to get Bluske for the game ending double play.
