Eau Claire (WQOW) - For more than three decades local TV host Dave Carlson has taken viewers on adventures in the outdoors.
Friday at the annual Breakfast in the Valley he was honored with a "Friend of Agriculture Award."
"Dave has done a great job with environmental and conservation initiatives, which definitely have an impact on farm families," says Eau Claire Area Chamber of Commerce president Bob McCoy.
That's why the Eau Claire Area Chamber of Commerce has honored Dave Carlson with the friend of agriculture award for his work on "Northland Adventures."
"You tend to see people get awards when they're done working or they're dead and I'm neither," says Carlson.
Which means you'll still see Dave working in the great outdoors educating and inspiring.
"What can you do about what you see? It's your world, look at that mirror. That's what we've tried to do for 32 or 33 years," says Carlson.
"While you're out doing all the fun things, hunting and fishing and everything, that conservation and protecting the environment are important. So he was just a natural selection for this year," says McCoy.
Receiving an award for all the farmers he's helped by promoting the environment and agriculture of the Chippewa Valley.
"The mainstream media has taken note on some of these stories that are not your typical hook and shell type of stories. Things that involve frac sand mining and the threat to waters and to fish," says Carlson.
"The only way that those things continue and survive is if not only agriculture, but everybody is conscientious about the environment," says McCoy.
So out of more than three decades of adventures, it comes as no surprise that the greatest joy has come from the very people who honored Dave with an award.
"The most interesting thing has been the people. The people, their character, how they interact with the outdoors," says Carlson.
He will also be honored with a statewide induction into the Wisconsin Broadcasters hall of fame later this month.
