Westby, WISCONSIN (WXOW) It's not the gold but there is no shame in winning silver at the state tournament.
Westby baseball is bringing that home after a heart-breaking 4-3 loss to Oconto Thursday in the division 3 championship.
It's the second time in school history they've finished as a runner up and it capped off a remarkable post season run for 9 seniors, many of whom were three-year starters.
So they left Fox Cities Stadium crestfallen but with a sense of pride.
"We're certainly going to miss these guys. This senior group was special. We had a lot of them for three years and it's been a heck of a run. Can you truly replace them? I don't know. They have their own identity. We'll have other guys come in and establish their own identity," said head coach John Hamilton.
"We set the bar getting to Appleton and getting to that last game. Too bad we couldn't take it home. But we had kids in the stands looking at us. It was a dream finishing the season in Appleton," said senior Nick Neely.
