Memorial run set for anniversary of Sikh Temple shooting

OAK CREEK (WKOW) -- Members of the Sikh Temple of Wisconsin will hold a memorial run marking the first anniversary of a deadly shooting there.

It's called the "Chardhi Kala" run/walk and it'll happen August 3rd in Oak Creek. The event is six kilometers in memory of the six victims killed when a gunman opened fire inside the temple last summer. "Chardhi Kala" refers to a sense of resilience and optimism.

People can register at www.chardhikala6k.org. The event is free but the Sikh Temple of Wisconsin is accepting donations to fund scholarships in the victims' names.

To mark the anniversary, there will also be a candlelight vigil in Oak Creek and an observance at the federal courthouse in Milwaukee.
