Monroe County Board approves funding to move forward with radio tower bids

SPARTA, WI (WXOW)—Monroe County's radio consultant will begin collecting proposals to modernize the county's radio towers.

Wednesday night the board approved an additional $3,700 to pay the consultant to move forward.

Public Safety Committee said the county's spotty coverage is a public safety risk.

Currently, portable radio coverage is 60-percent; standard coverage is 95-percent.

Building new radio towers will likely cost $4-6 million.

"We're mindful of taxpayers and the impact on them so we're looking for a solution that is reasonably cost effective and at the same time meet our radio needs," Randy Williams, Director, 911 Communication.

It will be three to six months before Monroe county has bids and a better idea of what the project will cost.
