LA CROSSE, Wisconsin (WXOW) – Unemployment rates are slightly down in all but two of Wisconsin's 72 counties, according to the Department of Workforce Development.
La Crosse County's preliminary unemployment rate for May is 5.2%.
That number – down a tenth of a percentage point from April – gives the county the fifth lowest jobless rate in the state, reports the DWD.
Regional Labor Market Analyst Bill Brockmiller said the drop was expected due to seasonal variations.
"The weather in May started to get somewhat better so we saw more employment in leisure and hospitality, and a little bit more in retail trade." Brockmiller said.
More students and graduates enter the job market in June, Brockmiller said. Since the market can't absorb them all at once, he expects June unemployment numbers to show a slight spike.
