LA CROSSE, Wisconsin (WXOW) -- With a chance for the Loggers to punch their playoff ticket yet again, Madison came into the Lumberyard on Wednesday night and crushed La Crosse, taking the first half title.
Wednesday's game wrapped-up an extremely tight battle for the Northwoods League South Division first half title. A win for either team guaranteed a spot in the postseason, which, as La Crosse found out last season, can translate well into a league championship.
Madison scored early and often. Collin Monsour got Luke Meeter to ground into a 6-4-3 double play, but that scored a run. Then again in the 4th, Jason Goldstein ripped a liner just out of Brandon DeFazio's reach. Another duck scored. The Mallards took a 3-2 lead into the 5th.
That's where Madison blew it wide open. With the bases loaded, Mike Reuvekamp skied a shot deep to center and off the wall. That scored all three runs as part of a five-run 5th inning to put the Mallards up 8-0.
The Loggers struggled to battle back. Mike Nadratowski blooped a single to left plating DeFazio. La Crosse managed two runs in the bottom of the 5th. That would be all they could muster, as Madison grabbed the first half crown with the 12-2 win.
