WIS. RAPIDS, Wisconsin (WXOW) -- It's a brand new day for the Loggers, and on a day known for marking the beginning of our nation, it's an appropriate place to start.
After falling just short of a first-half title, La Crosse began the second half of the Northwoods League season Thursday with an away-home series against Wisconsin Rapids.
La Crosse put the pressure on Rafters pitcher Brad Stroik in the first inning. Eric Toole reached first on a throwing error before stealing second. Stroik, however, managed to strike out a pair of batters to get out of the jam.
But the Loggers were just getting started. With two runners on in the second, Connor Teykl dribbled a base hit up the middle. Chris Keck scored, and Max McDowell followed him home to put the Loggers on the board first.
They kept the lead throughout the game, defeating Rapids 12-5. La Crosse starts the second half of the season at 1-0. The Loggers return home Friday night to take on the Rafters at 7:05 p.m.
