DNR's Boat Landing Blitz in effect for the Holiday Weekend

EAU CLAIRE, Wisconsin (WQOW) -  The DNR is giving out some freebies this weekend to area boaters to help combat invasive species.

During the DNR's annual "Boat Landing Blitz wardens will be handing out ice packs. It's to prevent the spread of invasive species like Eurasian Water Milfoil.
That spreading can happen when fishermen decide not to drain their live wells, allowing infectants in the water to move on to other lakes or rivers.
The ice packs are a free way from the DNR to keep fish cool. That way, people won't have to rely on their live wells to make sure freshly caught fish aren't going bad.

"It's encouraging boaters to drain that live well because a lot of them don't like to." says Rebecca Dick, a Deputy Conservation Warden. "They like to keep their fish fresh in the water.  But it's proven that the ice packs and ice will keep your fish fresher.  So this is our incentive."

The "Boat Blitz" will be taking place in 53 counties throughout Wisconsin this weekend covering 250 bodies of water.
