Walker comments on mine protesters

MADISON, Wisconsin (WXOW) - Gov. Scott Walker says activities of protesters at the site of proposed iron ore mine near Lake Superior "has no place in Wisconsin."

Walker issued a statement Friday commenting on the situation at the mine site, which has grown increasingly tense this week when the mining company hired paramilitary style guards to patrol the site.

Walker did not comment on the guards in his written statement. The guards were removed on Wednesday because they did not have the proper state licenses.

Instead, he decried protesters at the site as "extremists" who "should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law."

Walker says he spoke with the Iron County sheriff and offered any assistance that may be needed.

Gogebic Taconite is exploring opening a mine in the Penokee Hills.

Here is the Governor's full statement:

The type of harassment and abuse we saw on the recent video of radical activists at Gogebic Taconite's proposed mine site has no place in Wisconsin.  These extremists - who are disrupting work and causing harm to law-abiding employees - should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.  I appreciate the efforts of law enforcement in the area and spoke with the Iron County Sheriff to offer any assistance that may be needed going forward.  The laws of Wisconsin will be upheld.
