APNewsBreak: Wis. agent misused state email

MADISON, Wis. (AP) - A Wisconsin Department of Justice agent who has accused his boss of illegally selling firearms had been repeatedly disciplined for misusing the agency's email system.

DOJ Division of Criminal Investigation Special Agent Dan Bethards has accused former Superior Special Agent-in-Charge Jay Smith of selling weapons without a federal firearms license. Federal investigators are looking into the allegations.

The Associated Press obtained Bethards' disciplinary file through an open records request. Documents in the file indicate he sent out emails complaining about a lack of raises for special agents and calling Smith an obscene name. He also forwarded a joke mocking the dress of Islamic terrorists.

The records show he has been suspended twice since 2003, for violating DOJ email policy.
