SPARTA, Wisconsin (WXOW) -- Holmen rattled off two straight wins over Onalaska on Sunday afternoon to win the Legion Class AA Sparta regional.
Entering the final day of the tournament, Holmen faced an uphill battle against Onalaska's Post 336 for a shot at Class AA State. Holmen had already dropped an 8-5 loss to Onalaska on Saturday night.
On Sunday, Post 284 grabbed a 6-0 lead in the 6th inning of the first game on Hunter Brush's sacrifice fly to center field. Holmen made it a 7-0 game off a Brandon Knudtson RBI base hit back up the middle.
Post 336 tried to rally in the bottom half of the frame. Dustin Gordon plated two on a base hit down the third base line. Then, Jack Smalley singled in a run to make it a 7-3 game. Onalaska came no closer in game one. Holmen won by four, forcing a decisive final game.
In game two, Holmen again played out in front. Greg Rooney, Griffin Johnson and Tyler Anderson all plated RBI as part of a four-run 3rd inning. Onalaska tried to rally, but Vic Berkley's leaping grab on a Brock Rude line drive demonstrated the Post 284 defense, which held Onalaska bats silent.
Holmen won game two by a 5-0 final score. They advance to the Class AA State Tournament, which takes place August 2-6 in Kewaunee County.
