20 counties press for federal health care funds

LA CROSSE, Wis. (AP) - Twenty Wisconsin counties want the state to be a conduit for federal health care funds, even though Gov. Scott Walker has rejected the expansion of federal Medicaid.

The counties want to negotiate directly with the federal government for low-income health care dollars.

The Republican Legislature has gone along with Walker's budget which rejects $12 billion in federal money over 10 years. Instead, Walker's plan would increase the number of BadgerCare recipients, but tighten income restrictions for others.

Citizen Action of Wisconsin director Robert Kraig tells the La Crosse Tribune the 20 counties want Wisconsin to follow Ohio's example and give them access to the Medicaid funds. The counties have sent a letter to state health secretary Kitty Rhoades, pressing for the option.
