La Crosse man found head first in furnace at Torrance Casting

La Crosse, WISCONSIN (WXOW) - We now know the name of the man killed in an industrial accident at Torrance Casting in La Crosse.

La Crosse Police said he is 40-year-old Eric Lecher from La Crosse.

Police said Lecher was found unconscious and head first in a melting furnace at the facility around 3:30, Monday morning.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

During the time of the accident, the furnace was turned off and maintenance was being done by Lecher.

Police said Lecher's supervisor found him in the furnace, they suspect he had been there for about an hour.

The furnace is five-feet deep and 24-inches wide.

Police are not sure how Lecher got inside, upside down.

They are investigating and an autopsy is being performed. Foul play is not suspected.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration is also conducting an investigation.

They are looking into whether the metal casting facility violated any safety rules.  An OSHA representative said it could be up to six months for them to complete their report.
