Judging cheese at the 2013 American Cheese Society's yearly competition

MADISON (WKOW) -- It's the battle to be the big cheese in Madison.

Monona Terrace is hosting the American Cheese Society's annual conference, which includes a cheese competition.

Judges evaluate the cheeses based on things like taste, consistency and appearance.

This year, there are a record number of entries: 1,794.

"It tends to grow every year. And that's because we have so many fantastic cheesemakers not only in the United States, but in all of the Americas. And cheeses are represented from all of the Americas in this competition," said vice chair of judging Tom Kooiman.

Winners will be announced Friday. On Saturday, it's the Festival of Cheese, where people can come taste all of the entries. Then on Sunday, you can come back and buy them.
