MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Local mayors, law enforcement, gun owners and victims of gun violence are calling for tighter background checks for gun buyers.
The group gathered Wednesday in Minneapolis as part of a 25-state tour organized by Mayors Against Illegal Guns. They are seeking what they say are common-sense gun laws, including background checks for all gun sales.
Rally participants also read the names of those killed by gun violence since last December's school shooting in Newtown, Conn.
The sister of a victim of that shooting attended the rally. A survivor of the Accent Signage shooting in Minneapolis and the son of a man who was killed in that incident also attended.
According to the Centers for Disease Control, more than 700 people were killed with guns in Minnesota between 2001 and 2010.
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Victims' family members and survivors of recent mass shootings are in Minneapolis, calling for tighter background checks for gun buyers.
The rally organized by Mayors Against Illegal Guns is part of a 25-state bus tour to call for change in current gun policies. Participants will urge Congress to support legislation that would extend background checks to cover private gun sales in commercial settings.
A survivor of the Accent Signage shooting in Minneapolis will participate, as well as the son of a victim in that shooting. The sister of a Newtown, Conn., school shooting victim will also attend, along with mayors of Minneapolis and St. Paul, and law enforcement.
The rally is outside the U.S. District Courthouse in Minneapolis.
