Iowa officials offer tree program to fight insects

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - Alliant Energy is teaming up with Iowa forestry officials to offer a residential tree planting program aimed at fighting invasive insects.

Operation ReLeaf will offer Alliant Energy customers a discount when purchasing landscaping trees. The trees, which typically cost between $65 and $125, will be available for $25 each on a first-come, first-serve basis.

The program, which will distribute 35 species of trees, will be offered this fall at eight locations around Iowa. Customers can place orders online in advance.

The state Department of Natural Resources has encouraged homeowners to plant a diverse mix of tree species to combat the impact of invasive insects like the emerald ash borer.
