LA CROSSE, Wisconsin (WXOW) -- Brandon DeFazio drove in the winning run and the La Crosse Loggers won a 5-4 thriller Sunday night over the Lakeshore Chinooks to pull within two games of the Northwoods League South Division lead.
The Loggers started quick in game one of the two game series. La Crosse opened scoring in the bottom of the first when Zack Rivera reached on a botched double-play attempt. Two La Crosse runs crossed the plate making it a 2-0 lead.
They added to the early advantage in the second. With runners at the corners, DeFazio one-hopped the wall in right-center allowing Nick Kanavas to score. The Loggers led 3-0 into the 4th inning.
La Crosse scored their 4th run in the 4th. Johnny Bekakis lasered a double to center field. Kevin Zak scored all the way from first base.
They would need all four plus DeFazio's late RBI. La Crosse hung on to the 5-4 win, improving to 17-11 on the second half. The Loggers stand in second place, a half-game ahead of Eau Claire in the NWL South.
