(WXOW) -- The Legion baseball state tournaments wrapped up on Sunday. La Crescent brought home championship hardware, while Viroqua fell short for an eighth time.
La Crescent faced off against Morris on Sunday for the Minnesota Division 2 Title in Bird Island. One run proved the difference, as La Crescent won the championship by a 4-3 final score. A welcome-home party is planned for the team at 7:15 Monday night at the La Crescent American Legion.
Viroqua entered Sunday with two chances to win a Class A Wisconsin Championship at the Viroqua Park Bowl. Waupun, however, knocked-off defending state champion Wisconsin Dells in the semifinal.
Waupun jumped out to a 3-1 lead in game one. Viroqua's Tyler Trautsch belted a two-run homer in the 5th to even the game at three. Viroqua would take a 4-3 lead into the 7th.
They would be unable to hold the advantage. Waupun's Jared Larson tied the game at four with an RBI single to centerfield. The very next batter, Nate Hopp, broke the tie with another RBI single as part of a five-run inning for Waupun. They took game one 8-4 and forced a decisive game two.
Waupun took a lead in game two and never looked back. Viroqua managed to keep it close thanks in part to Abe Beckstrand's base hit down the line in the 3rd. Viroqua down just two after three innings.
That would be as close as they come. Waupun pulling away with another five-run inning in the 5th. Hopp secured the strikeout to end the game, giving Waupun the 11-4 win for the Class A Championship.
